Where to live for a 30, 45 or 60-minute Prague commute
Compare Prague commuter corridors using a door-to-door budget, a dated PID timetable snapshot, disruption tests and current property searches.

A “30-minute town” does not create a 30-minute commute. Start with the workplace door and build backwards: final Prague connection, transfer buffer, train, access to the origin station, parking or bicycle storage, and a disruption reserve. Only then compare homes. A fast railway line can still be the wrong corridor for your actual destination.
A current station-to-station snapshot
The table is Landomo’s calculation from the official ROPID PID GTFS Static feed, generated daily and covering the following 14 days. For one representative Monday we selected the fastest scheduled direct service departing between 05:00 and 09:00 from each named station to Prague Main Station, Masaryk Station or Smíchov. The result shows what the rail segment can do—not what a household can promise every morning.
Fastest direct morning service in the data sample
Weekday 3 August 2026, departures 05:00–09:00, no transfer. These are not door-to-door times.
Build a door-to-door budget
Write the destination as a building, not “Prague”. Pankrác, Dejvice, Karlín, Chodov and Smíchov reward different arrival stations. Then calculate the same chain for every candidate property.
- Origin access: front door to platform, including the path from the actual address, parking search, bicycle storage and a missed-feeder buffer.
- Platform buffer: the time you must arrive before departure for the trip to remain dependable.
- Scheduled rail segment: use the service you would really take, not only the day’s fastest express.
- Transfer penalty: walking between platforms, a realistic connection margin and the cost of a missed connection.
- Final Prague leg: arrival station to the workplace door at the actual peak time.
- Disruption reserve: planned works, a cancelled service, bad weather and the viable fallback route.
Choose the corridor that reaches your destination
- East and south-east: Říčany and Český Brod feed Prague Main Station, useful for destinations connected to metro C or the central rail spine.
- North: Kralupy feeds the central rail network; verify which Prague stop your chosen service actually uses.
- West and south-west: Beroun’s fastest sample reaches Smíchov, which can be excellent for Prague 5 and less direct for a workplace across the city.
- Longer fast-rail candidates: Benešov and Kolín can post a competitive express segment, but frequency, fare zones, access to the station and fallback options matter more as distance grows.
- Kladno: treat construction and temporary transfers as a current-state requirement, not a footnote to an old headline time.
Use the official PID train maps to discover corridors, then the PID Lítačka journey planner for the exact origin, destination, weekday and arrival time. The planner includes current connections and disruptions; a static article cannot.
Test frequency, disruptions and the second-best trip
The fastest direct run is useful for discovering a corridor, but it is not enough to buy a home. Record at least three consecutive usable departures, the gap between them and the last acceptable evening return. Repeat the exercise with one service cancelled and with your normal Prague connection missed.
- Frequency: does missing one train add ten minutes or an hour?
- Fallback: is there another rail line, a credible bus, park-and-ride or only a car journey exposed to the same peak?
- Work pattern: a twice-weekly hybrid commute can tolerate a different cost and variance from five fixed office days.
- Household resilience: can both adults reach work, school and care obligations when one car or one line fails?
- Fare: use the current consecutive PID zones and the correct Prague coupon combination, not a remembered ticket price.
PID explains that Prague and the Central Bohemian Region use consecutive time-and-zone fare validity. Let the current planner recommend the ticket for the actual route, then add parking, bicycle, fuel and the value of time to the monthly housing comparison.
Turn the commute into a property search
Search the municipality only to understand supply. For the shortlist, inspect every listing’s exact address or map position and recalculate access to the station. A cheaper home on the far side of town can erase the rail advantage; a smaller home within a safe walk can improve the entire household day.

- Rent before buying where the job, hybrid policy, school route or corridor is still uncertain.
- Compare total monthly cost, including fare, parking, a second car, maintenance and the time value agreed by the household.
- Visit at commute time: walk the dark or winter route, test platform access and observe the evening connection home.
- Keep the home-specific evidence: screenshots of representative connections, disruption alternatives and the date tested.
If the move is connected to a new job, compare this page with the sell, rent or commute decision guide. Families needing more space should also use the move-up housing decision, and renters moving into the city can follow the Prague rental and move-in guide.
Method, limits and update policy
Data source: ROPID, PID GTFS Static, CC BY, feed published 1 August 2026 for 1–14 August 2026. Landomo parsed active rail trips for Monday 3 August, origin departures from 05:00 through 09:00, and selected the shortest direct scheduled trip to Prague Main Station, Masaryk Station or Smíchov. We excluded transfers and did not estimate walking, delay, crowding, cancellations or door-to-door time. The displayed values are our derived calculation, not a ROPID guarantee.
