About this listing

Exact location, viewing instructions and further details can be found in the brochure below. A magical, secluded woodland of hornbeam and oak, with strong recreational potential, north of Beckley and close to the River Rother. Coneyburrow Copse forms part of a wider Ancient Woodland, known as Knelle Wood in the High Weald National Landscape, and just a short car journey from the historically rich town of Rye. The tranquillity of this beautiful lowland woodland allows you to feel completely detached from the outside world, and its smaller size means that any projects can be taken on at a manageable scale. These factors were of great appeal to the current owner and is sure to be the same for the next custodian. Located over level loamy clays, the mature canopy consists largely of hornbeam coppice along with sweet chestnut, oak, birch, aspen, ash and cherry. Having not undergone any thinning since around the 1970’s, a new custodian could most definitely apply for a thinning licence to fell some areas. Potential yields could provide fuel for the log burner or could be crafted into fence posts. Within the shrub layer below, you will find a relatively uncluttered melange of holly, hornbeam and thorn. A number of significant Ancient Woodland indicators can be found scattered amongst the woodland floor including wood anemones, bluebells, red campion, dog’s mercury, and primrose. There are many spots to hone your bushcraft skills here, with ample material hand. The odd weekend or two of camping would be a wonderful way to enjoy this peaceful landscape with family or friends, and the northwestern side of the wood makes a particularly pleasant place to set up a picnic bench looking out towards the Kent rural vistas. There are occasional undulations that, during wetter times, may fill to create small ponds and provide nourishment to local wildlife. Visiting mammals include deer (fallow, roe and muntjac), rabbit, badger, wood mouse, American mink and, less frequently, wild boar - this is largely due to boar populations gravitating westward. Feathered guests are tawny owl, wren, robin, blackbird, blackcap, several species of tit, and thrush. Access is taken through a gate and over an unpaved woodland track through the wider wood, then through a wooden barrier just before the northeast boundary (between CD on the map). Our Forester's Thoughts Sam says... "Hornbeam is a wonderfully hard, durable wood and has many uses including piano mechanisms, billiard cues, and drumsticks. I would consider a suitable stem to craft a few kitchen chopping blocks; these would make ideal gifts for family and friends. For those who might enjoy exercising the sporting rights at Coneyburrow, building a hide is a good way to stalk boar without being seen. By putting up a few trail cameras, I can also monitor woodland activity when I am not there." Please remember some management operations require approval and/or a licence.
