Access is through a locked gate and along a series of tracks. This woodland is situated near the southwest boundary of the wider area, allowing beautiful evening sunshine to reach the woodland floor on clear evenings. Designated as a Plantation on Ancient Woodland Site (PAWS), the lofty canopy principally consists of oak, beech and birch. The oak and beech are roughly 70 to 80 years old and have undergone a gentle thin with the aim of allowing the more favourable stems to improve and grow, creating a legacy for future generations. Occasional cherry, hornbeam, sycamore and lime, particularly on the northern boundary, all add to the species mix. Patches of holly and hazel coppice can be found in the shrub layer, with smaller but promising holly clumps at ground level – which one day may create areas of shelter and privacy. Other ground flora includes primrose, bracken and fruity bramble. A new owner might nurture the growth of the oak stems to a good size and form for future craft projects - oak frame structures or rustic furniture come to mind. There are a number of recreation and camping areas to use in the warmer months of the year. The thinning racks throughout allow good access to most areas. Birdlife found here include owls, jay, blackbirds, green woodpeckers, lesser redpoll, robins and a multitude of harmonious songsters. Mammals known to inhabit the area comprise deer (roe, muntjac and fallow), hare, wood mouse, squirrel and fox. Our Forester'sThoughts Sam says... "I would consider a management plan for the oaks’ potential here - epicormic growth control, by pruning to reduce the number of knots in the timber would be beneficial in the long term. The brash at ground level presents a ready-made supply for some domestic fuel. I would also enjoy occasional camping trips with friends and family; Garrett Wood is such a haven of wildlife, it would be the perfect spot to wake up early and witness the magnificent dawn chorus of the English countryside."
