Glasgow lies approximately forty-three miles to the north-west. Biggar offers a good range of local town services, with Peebles providing a larger range of services along with secondary schooling. Nearest primary schooling is at Romano Bridge, approximately two miles to the north. The nearest livestock market is at Lanark, which is approximately nineteen miles to the west. The surrounding area is characterised by a mixture of open farmland, commercial forestry, farm woodland and upland areas.
